The Almost Empty Chest

Pirates Zuri, Pip and Mo followed a map to Button Island. Beneath the third palm they found a chest. Inside were no coins, no jewels and not even one chocolate doubloon.

There were twelve seed packets, a small watering can and a shell that glowed when someone shared.

“Worst treasure ever,” said Pip.

The shell went dark.

Twelve Small Chances

Zuri planted tomatoes. Mo planted sunflowers. Pip planted one seed grudgingly and marked the spot with a pirate flag.

They sailed away. Rain fell. Sun shone. When they returned, the flag stood beside one determined green shoot. Pip gave it all the water and pretended not to care.

Weeks later, vines covered the island. Sunflowers made shade. Tomatoes filled three baskets. The shell glowed as the pirates carried food to a nearby village after a storm.

A Map With More Islands

The villagers gave them bread, songs and six new kinds of seed. Pip finally admitted this was better than chocolate doubloons, because nobody had to stop after eating it.

They redrew the treasure map. Instead of one X, it showed every island with bare soil and hungry people.

The three pirates sailed beneath a flag stitched with a green shoot. Wherever they planted, the treasure grew. Whenever they shared it, the shell lit their way home.
