The Map That Dripped

Navigator Nell knew every curl on her paper map. Then a wave leaped over the rail and turned the ink into blue puddles.

“We are lost,” Nell said. Barnacle, the ship's smallest dog, shook seawater over her boots.

Captain Kit lowered the sails. “Then we shall be safely lost while we think.” Nobody blamed Nell. Maps and waves had always been enemies.

A Map Above the Water

Nell noticed the moon making a silver road across the sea. The North Star waited beyond the mast. Near the boat, floating leaves pointed away from the river mouth.

She drew a new map on the back of a flour sack: star, moon road, leaves. Barnacle added a pawprint by sitting on it.

They sailed slowly. When the moon road moved, Nell checked the star. When clouds covered the star, she watched the leaves.

The Mark That Stayed

By midnight their harbour lantern blinked ahead. The crew cheered, but Nell kept the wet paper map instead of throwing it away.

On the wall of her cabin she hung both maps: the neat one with its melted ink and the flour sack with its pawprint.

“Which is the better map?” asked Captain Kit.

“The one that works tonight,” Nell said.

Barnacle curled beneath them. Outside, the moon laid a silver path all the way to morning.
