Stories

Classic tales are retold from public-domain sources: the Grimms' Children's and Household Tales, Andersen's fairy tales, Perrault's Histoires ou contes du temps passé, Andrew Lang's coloured fairy books, the fables attributed to Aesop, and named folk-tale collections. We keep the plot, the memorable lines and the moral shape; we modernise vocabulary for reading aloud and soften violence that serves no purpose for a young listener. Where a story's ending has been changed from the source (for example, a death replaced by a departure), the story page's origin line says it is adapted. Original stories are written by the team and marked as original.

Every story is edited by a second person, read aloud to time it, and given a suggested age range. The reading guide (lesson, questions, vocabulary) is written with the help of AI tools and then reviewed and edited by an editor before it is published; nothing in it is published unread.

Illustrations

Illustrations are original artwork made for this site. Some are drawn by our illustrators; some are produced with AI image tools from a written brief and then reviewed, selected and where necessary corrected by an illustrator. We do not use stock photography, and we do not copy illustrations from published books.

Parent guides

Guides are written by the editorial team and cite their sources at the foot of the page. We prefer primary sources (health services, literacy charities, the original texts of the classics) and we do not cite a study we have not been able to read. Where evidence is mixed we say so rather than picking a side. Guides carry the date they were published and last updated.

Use of AI

We use AI tools as assistants, never as authors of record: for first drafts of reading guides, for illustration drafts, and for checking reading level. Every published word and image has been reviewed by a person who is responsible for it. We do not generate stories in bulk, and we do not publish anything nobody on the team has read.

Advertising and independence

The site is supported by advertising placed outside the story text. Advertisers have no influence over which stories or guides are published or what they say. We have no sponsored stories and no affiliate links in the story library.

Children's privacy

The site is designed to be used by children with an adult. It has no accounts, no comments and no way to submit personal information except the contact form, which is intended for adults. Favourites and reading progress are stored only in the browser on your own device. See the privacy policy.

Corrections

If you find an error in a story's attribution, a guide's facts, or an age label that you think is wrong, tell us through the contact page. Corrections to guides are noted at the foot of the guide with the date. Corrections to stories update the story's "updated" date on the page.

• 22 September 2026: Site relaunched on a new platform. Every story re-edited for reading aloud; reading guides, age ranges and read-aloud times added to all stories; parent guides published. All existing story and theme addresses were preserved.
