How we're different

There are many websites with bedtime stories on them. This is what we do that most of them do not.

Most story sites publish the text and stop. This one measures how long each story takes to read aloud, says which ages it suits, reads it in your device’s own voice, turns it into big-text pages, and ends with the questions worth asking afterwards.

1. Every story is built for reading aloud

Edited by reading it out

Text written to be read silently and text written to be read aloud are different things. Our stories are edited by reading them aloud: sentences that trip the tongue are cut, dialogue is tagged so a parent knows who is speaking before they speak, and chapter breaks fall where a tired reader can stop. The site's Listen button reads any story with your device's own voice, highlighting each paragraph, for the nights you cannot.

2. Honest labels on every story

Each story shows its read-aloud time in minutes and a suggested age range before you open it. The times are measured against a read-aloud pace, not a skim, and the age labels err on the side of gentleness. A story in the toddler list has nothing in it that frightens toddlers.

3. A reading guide, not just a story

The questions are written for you

Every story ends with the lesson in a sentence, three to five questions worth asking, and the words a child might not know. Research on shared reading is clear that talking about the story roughly doubles its value; we give you the questions so you do not have to invent them at nine o'clock.

4. A story-book, not a web page

Story-book mode turns any tale into big-text pages, one chapter at a time, with the illustration on the page it belongs to and a night-light setting for the dark. It is the closest a screen gets to a picture book.

5. The next story is already chosen

When the last page turns, the next story in the same theme is one button away, and Tonight's story makes the choice for you each day. Favourites stay on your device; there is no account to create.

6. The classics, credited

Our retellings of Grimm, Andersen, Perrault and Aesop say so, and the parent guides explain where the tales came from and how they changed. Original stories are marked as original.

7. Nothing between you and the story

No pop-ups, no autoplay, no newsletter gate, no app to install. Advertising, where it appears, sits outside the story text. The site loads nothing from third parties except the adverts themselves.
