The writers, editors and illustrators behind the stories, and how the work is organised.
The site is made by a small distributed team of writers, editors and illustrators working freelance. Every story is written or retold by one person, edited by a second, illustrated, and signed off by a third before it is published.
BedtimeStory.kids is made by a small, distributed team working on a freelance basis. Stories are written or retold by the authors, edited by a senior editor, illustrated, and checked once more before publication. No story goes live on the word of one person.
Founded the site out of a conviction that the bedtime story is the most under-rated ten minutes of family life. Studied English with a creative-writing emphasis, and still writes many of the original stories.
Writes original tales and edits everyone else's. Responsible for reading level, age labels and the discussion guides that follow each story.
Writes and edits, with a particular eye for the rhythm of a story read aloud; if a sentence trips a tired parent, it goes back.
Retells the classics, keeping the shape of the original and the lines children remember while making them safe for the youngest listeners.
Final read on every story and guide, and keeper of the corrections log on the editorial policy page.
Edits the parent guides, checks their sources, and makes sure a claim about children and sleep can be backed up before it is published.
Illustrates the stories, working from the text to put the picture on the page where the moment happens.
Illustrates stories and the site's own artwork, and reviews AI-assisted illustration drafts before any are used.
How a story reaches the site
Four steps, and never one person's word
- Draft. An author writes an original story or retells a public-domain classic, naming the source.
- Edit. A senior editor reads it aloud, cuts what does not work in the mouth, checks the age label and the reading time, and writes or checks the discussion guide.
- Illustrate. An illustrator produces the artwork; AI-assisted drafts, where used, are reviewed and revised by a person.
- Final read. A second editor signs it off. Corrections after publication are logged on the editorial policy page.
