The Giant Who Had No Heart In His Body
Greta, a brave little girl, lives in a peaceful valley where everyone fears a mysterious giant said to have no heart. Driven by curiosity and kindness, Greta sets off on a journey to his icy castle. She hopes to understand his solitude and discover if even the coldest heart can be touched by warmth and friendship.
The Peaceful Valley
In a sunny valley, standing between two tall mountains, lived many happy creatures. The air often smelt of sweet flowers, and the bright sun felt warm on their fur.
"What a lovely morning!" chirped a squirrel, offering a nut to a little bird. "Yes," rumbled a sleepy badger, "the sun always feels so kind here."
The Mysterious Giant
The happy squirrel suddenly dropped his nut with a clatter. "Oh dear!" he mumbled. "We must not speak so loudly about *him*."
"Who are you talking about?" asked the sleepy badger, opening one eye slowly. "Everyone knows the giant lives in the deep, dark part of the forest. He has no heart inside his body, they say, and feels as cold as winter ice." Every animal nearby twitched their ears.
The Brave Little Girl
Greta heard the badger's last sleepy rumble. "A giant with no heart?" she thought, her brow furrowed. "That sounds very lonely." She wanted to know if it was true, and if she could help him.
She hurried to her room and picked up her small, canvas rucksack. "An apple for energy," she told her reflection, "and a cheese roll for lunch!" With her bag ready, Greta took a deep breath and stepped into the forest, ready to meet the giant.
The Journey
Greta walked deeper into the dark forest. The moon shone bright, lighting her path as she went. She took a big breath with each step, feeling brave and ready for anything.
Little eyes watched her from the dark trees, and a furry squirrel peeked out. "You are doing great!" it squeaked from its hiding spot. A tiny bird flew close to Greta's ear, its feathers glistening under the moon. "Keep going, Greta," it chirped softly. "Your bravery shines brighter than the stars."
Greta walked past many tall bushes and splashed over little streams, feeling the ground grow harder. Soon the trees grew thin, and the air turned very chilly. Up ahead, she saw the giant's castle. Its tall, grey walls stood silent and still, looking very lonely indeed.
The Giant's Castle
The castle stood silent, its walls made of ice and its doors of snow. Greta felt a shiver, but she took a brave breath and walked closer. She reached out her small hand and knocked on the enormous doors.
With a loud rumble like thunder, the heavy doors slowly opened wide. A giant appeared, very tall indeed, reaching almost to the sky. His face was quiet and serious. "Young one, why have you come?" he asked, his deep voice booming, echoing through the icy halls.
Greta looked up, up, up into his eyes. She saw no meanness there, only a deep sadness hiding behind them. "I've come to understand you, to find out why you live so far from everyone," she said, her voice clear and kind.
The Heart of the Matter
Greta watched the giant's huge face. His serious eyes grew kind. "I have no heart," he whispered, his big voice very quiet. "Someone was mean to me once, long ago. I felt so sad that my heart just went away."
"But why?" Greta asked, tilting her head. "Why do you stay all by yourself?"
The giant looked away, staring at the tall, grey mountains. "I loved someone very much," he told her. "But they hurt me, and it made my chest ache. I decided never to feel sad again." He added, "I hid myself here so no one could hurt my heart, because now I don't have one."
The Power of Kindness
Greta listened to the giant's sad story. Her eyes looked very kind as she started to tell him some tales of her own. She told happy stories about her friends. She also told tales her mum and dad shared, full of kindness. These stories showed how people helped each other. Even when things were difficult, they looked after their friends. Greta knew that kindness could fix any problem. She told the giant this with a gentle voice.
Greta looked at the giant, then she smiled gently. "See," she said, "even when we feel all by ourselves, someone will help us. That's how kindness works. It pulls people together. It makes everyone stronger."
The Giant's Transformation
Greta's kind stories made the giant feel a strange tingle in his chest. A little warmth started to spread where it had been cold for so long. He looked at Greta's smiling face, and he realised a different life with friends might be possible. He had not thought of this before.
"I never thought kindness could be so strong," the giant said. His deep voice sounded like a gentle hum now. "You have shown me my heart can still feel warm. All these years it felt only cold."
Every day after that, the giant changed a little more. The cold feeling inside him started to fade away. He smiled often, and his eyes looked brighter, especially when he began to laugh. He learned the names of the tiny creatures in the valley. The giant even helped them with big jobs that their small hands could not do.
A New Beginning
Greta often walked with the giant. She showed him how to play gently with the valley creatures. At first, tiny squirrels hid behind big green leaves. They watched him with wide, curious eyes. Then a little grey mouse bravely scuttled closer to the giant's huge foot. "Hello!" squeaked the mouse. "Will you help us build a new path?"
The giant smiled. He carefully moved a big stone. "I can help with that," he rumbled, his voice like a soft drum. He loved hearing the children laugh as he played with them. He would lift a group of tiny birds high into the air, making them chirp with delight. "Higher, Giant! Higher!" they called.
He built houses with thick, strong walls, using logs bigger than any tree. "These homes will keep you safe and warm," he told them. The giant's big laugh echoed through the valley, making everyone feel happy. The valley felt full of sunshine now, and the giant was a much-loved friend to all.
